How can the situation in Spain be interpreted? Why is the EU not raising any concerns regarding the question of rule of law in Spain? What is the legal situation of Catalonia? These were someof the topics discussed at the event of the Center for European Studies.
The event which was attended by Juan Garcia Gallardo, Vice President of the Autonomus Community of Castilla Y Leon, Istvan Kovacs, Strategic Director of the Center for Fundamental Rights, Zoltan Szalai, General Director at MCC. The event was moderated by Rodrigo Ballester, The Head of the Center for European Studies at MCC.
The panel discussion started with the general outlining of the problem in Spain regarding questions of rule of law, even touching on the double standard shown by Brussels in relation to Hungary and Spain.
Hundreds of thousands of people filled the streets of 52 provincial capitals of Spain, which was ignited by the fact the Pedro Sanchez made an amnesty deal with the Catalan separatist Junts party, a party formerly founded by Carles Puigdemont, who led the failed seccesion attempt back in 2017.
This is unacceptable as this beforementioned deal is a massive threat regarding to the rule of law in Spain as it decriminalises serious crimes commited against the state. This deal was solely struck by political reasons by Pedro Sanchez in order to gain political leverage so he could retain his power.
What will be the long term consequences if the amnesty bill goes through? Why is Brussels not raising its voice? These are still crucial questions yet to be answered.
