On 10 March, Éric Zemmour visited MCC Budapest for a thought-provoking event on Europe's future in the Trump era, exploring the continent’s identity crisis and shifting global role. From a keynote speech on French civilisation to a dynamic round table on decline, war, and integration, the day sparked spirited debate on Europe's past, present, and uncertain future.
Mr. Éric Zemmour was welcomed at the MCC in Budapest for an event dedicated to the future of Europe in the era of Donald Trump. A well-known journalist, writer and polemicist in France, Éric Zemmour is the founder and president of the Reconquête party and a candidate in the 2022 presidential election. After spending the morning answering questions from the Hungarian press, Éric Zemmour gave a speech on the state of France and French civilisation, which he believes is in decline due to its loss of identity and its fading presence on the international stage.
He then answered questions from Rodrigo Ballester, Head of the Center for European Studies, on the main political issues of the day, the balance of power within the European Union and threats to freedom of expression in Western Europe, before taking part in a round table discussion moderated by Yann Caspar, with Titus Techera, Olivier Battistini and Thibaud Gibelin. During this round table, discussions focused more on historical and philosophical aspects of the European situation, with debates on the concepts of decline, civilisation and war.
Participants at the event discussed the consequences of the Trump tsunami for the future of Europe, in terms of its economic and commercial prospects, geopolitics and the nature of European integration, all against the backdrop of the war between Russia and Ukraine and the possibility of a decline in North American support for Europe.
The discussions at this event were held in French with live interpretation.
